In this course, you’ll try a series of practical techniques for figuring out the sequence of events in your novel. Along the way, you’ll pick up skills like world-building, generating sensory details, honing your narrative voice, and working with flashbacks. This is a highly generative class and a great way to build a writing routine and generate and keep momentum.

Course Outline:

Do you have a book-length work of fiction that you can’t find the time to finish? Are you stuck at a key point in a manuscript you’ve poured your whole heart into? Do you feel like your novel is missing something, but you can’t quite figure out what? Don’t despair or struggle alone! Give yourself the gift of creative community and join this novel writing workshop with award-winning author and writing coach Dr. Mathangi Subramanian.

In this Intermediate/Advanced-level class, you’ll learn how to structure your novel by focusing on the building blocks of fiction through generative exercises and explorations of craft. Students will determine how to make the best decisions for their works-in-progress based on point of view, tense, character development, the necessities of world-building, and more. The majority of class time will be focused on generating and structuring writing, so this is an excellent choice for anyone trying to build momentum in their practice.

Mathangi Subramanian

Mathangi Subramanian is a neurodiverse South Asian American novelist and essayist and the founder of Moon Rabbit Writing Studio, a boutique writing workshop especially for BIPOC and neurodiverse writers. Her middle grade book Dear Mrs. Naidu won the South Asia Book award, and her novel A People’s History of Heaven was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award and was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner prize and The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. Her picture book A Butterfly Smile was inducted into the Nobel Museum by economics laureate Dr. Esther Duflo. She is a guest artist at Denver School of the arts and holds a doctorate in education from Columbia University Teachers College.
