Hell is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. In Gloria Naylor’s 1985 novel Linden Hills, an explosive and dynamic allegory of Dante’s Inferno, it sure looks a lot like the Black suburban middle class. This quietly intelligent book turns considerations of class, racial uplift, and progress on their head. Any and all readers interested in discovering one of America’s greatest unsung authors are welcome.
