This single-session group, presented in partnership with the Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival, is held in person at The Center for Fiction. Registration includes a complimentary drink from our Café & Bar.

This June, join us for an intimate book-listening and discussion celebrating the voices and narratives that move through the Caribbean and its diaspora in celebration of Caribbean-American Heritage Month.

Our featured story, “The Fastest Man in the World” by Maisy Card, comes from the Lovers Rock audiobook—a vibrant collection of seven Jamaican short stories. Card, the quintessential Caribbean-American writer, masterfully weaves memory, migration, and myth in a voice that feels both ancestral and urgent in a story that imagines strange, quirky, familiar and delicious encounters between people in search of romantic love in the twenty-first century.

There’s nothing more Caribbean than having a story told to you. In this reading group, we approach the intersection of the region’s ancient oral tradition and the written word. Lean into the aurality of the audiobook experience—where storytelling returns to its roots, not just read but heard, felt, and shared. Listening is more than passive—it’s immersive. It slows us down. It draws us closer. As a community, we’ll discuss, reflect and celebrate the fulsome joy of a Jamaican short story, with its language, its landscape, its vibe, its humor, its edge and its persistent, dogged beauty.

What to read in advance: A copy of the audiobook version of “The Fastest Man in the World” by Maisy Card will be provided after registration.

Andie Davis

Andie Davis

Andie Davis is a novelist, essayist, and short story author. Her work explores themes of Black identity, global citizenship, and self-determination. In centering characters from corners of the African Diaspora that are underrepresented in mainstream contemporary fiction, she seeks to capture the universality of the human condition through a Black lens and to expand the canon of stories by and about Black people.

Andie is the winner of a 2024 Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Award for fiction. Her debut novel, Let Me Liberate You, was published in 2024 by Little A. Her short stories have been published in the Caribbean Writer, Delmarva Review, and other publications, while her editorials on sustainability have appeared in Ghana Web and Business Daily Africa.

Born in Montserrat, Andie grew up in Barbados and as a teen moved with her family to the United States. A graduate of Howard University and Harvard Law School, she worked as a lawyer in Eastern Europe and Latin America before entering the global development sector. She lives in New York City.
