What does it mean when we say that a writer has “such a strong voice”? How do we get a sense of our own voices as writers? And how can we create and maintain a distinctive and consistent voice that guides readers through our novels and brings its characters and events to life? In this six-week workshop, we will develop the voice of our novels through character, point of view, setting, structure, and more. We will also consider how to locate our voices as writers in the broader literary landscape. In each session, we will discuss these fundamentals of craft, try writing exercises, and workshop excerpts from students’ novels.
