Perfect for the writer who is mid-stride on a new story, as well as anyone trying to figure out how to make a story “work,” this ten-week short fiction workshop is broken up into two parts: In the first four weeks, we will read and discuss contemporary and classic short stories, using these craft discussions as inspiration for our own writing, and generating new pages or deepening work we intend to workshop later.. With new pages written and a deepening sense of craft possibilities, the second half of the course turns to workshopping one another’s works-in-progress.

Designed to be an inspiring and inclusive space for every voice, this workshop centers the author’s intentions with their work as much as the words on the page, prioritizing the writer’s needs and energies for the next round of writing/revision. Students will leave this course with new work, greater clarity, and more confidence about how they will write the stories they need to tell. This course is especially ideal for those considering MFA programs, recent MFA graduates, or anyone hoping to reinvigorate and gain new insights about their fiction-writing practice.

Course Outline:

  • Weeks 1–4: We will read stories by Sarah Thankam Mathews, Claire Luchette, Edward P. Jones, and Adam Haslett, among others. We will discuss that week’s reading in terms of craft (perspective, scene construction, character development, etc.), and let that conversation move us into at least two generative writing exercises per class.
  • Weeks 6–10: Each participant will choose the story they wish to submit for workshop, craft an author’s request letter—identifying their artistic intentions, their quandaries, and areas of craft in which they feel most confident—and then come prepared to discuss their work with their writing peers. Students should plan to dedicate 3–5 reading/annotating hours each week in addition to building in a daily writing practice.

Level: Intermediate
