Do you have a book-length work of fiction that you can’t find the time to finish? Are you stuck at a key point in a manuscript you’ve poured your whole heart into? Do you feel like your novel is missing something, but you can’t quite figure out what? Don’t despair or struggle alone! Give yourself the gift of creative community and join this novel writing workshop with award-winning author and writing coach Dr. Mathangi Subramanian.
In this Intermediate/Advanced-level class, you’ll learn how to structure your novel by focusing on the building blocks of fiction through generative exercises and explorations of craft. Students will determine how to make the best decisions for their works-in-progress based on point of view, tense, character development, the necessities of world-building, and more. You’ll also try a series of practical techniques for figuring out the sequence of events in your novel. Along the way, you’ll pick up skills like world-building, generating sensory details, honing your narrative voice, and working with flashbacks.
The majority of class time will be focused on generating and structuring writing, so this is an excellent choice for anyone trying to build momentum in their practice.
Teaching Style: My teaching style combines high expectations with high support. I run an inclusive classroom where folks of all experiences, backgrounds, and abilities are welcomed and nurtured. It’s conversational, participant-driven, and always focuses on joy.
Level: Intermediate/Advanced
This course is held online via Zoom. Please note there will be no meeting on May 24th.
