This group will read and discuss three award-winning debuts (including both a finalist and winner of The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize), ranging from a meditative saga and bold bildungsroman to an autobiographical love story that explores family, immigration, and inherited cultures. The stunning, epistolary grace of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (shortlisted for the 2019 First Novel Prize), the tender and elegant family story of The Five Wounds (winner of the 2021 First Novel Prize), and the witty narration of new adulthood in American Fever are all standout examples of the unique perspectives, intergenerational challenges, and myriad complications of immigrant stories.

What to read before the first meeting: On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

What to expect from this reading group: This reading group will be conversational and participant-driven with the instructor facilitating the discussion.
