World and Languages: Writing About Languages, Travels, and Immigration with Jenna Tang

Everyone has a journey with their own language(s). Languages are ways we see this world, and they are deeply connected to our stories about family, travels, living across countries, and our identities. What does language mean to you, personally? And what are your relationships with the languages you speak and/or write? How do we write about languages that matter to us?

Over the course of this workshop, we’ll be reading compelling personal essays and writings from authors such as Don Mee Choi, Mirene Arsanios, Sulaiman Addonia, Sawako Nakayasu, and more, and writing our own pieces. We’ll workshop students’ pieces and give each other written and oral feedback. In class, we’ll introduce different types of writings and themes that are centering around languages, translation, and immigration. We’ll be writing together, reading closely, examining how visual art and photography can play into our writing structures, and discussing what we can do to make our voices heard.

Jenna Tang is a Taiwanese writer and literary translator based in New York. She translates from Chinese, French, and Spanish. She received her MFA in Fiction Creative Writing from The New School. Her translations or essays are published in Restless Books, Latin American Literature Today, AAWW, Catapult, Mcsweeney’s and elsewhere. She is one of the selected translators for the 2021 ALTA Emerging Translators Mentorship program with a focus on Taiwanese prose. Her novel in translation is upcoming in 2024.
