This reading group takes participants on a journey through time, mortality, and the profound “what-ifs” of existence, using graphic novels from three different countries that challenge our perceptions of life’s possibilities. Beginning with Richard McGuire’s Here, we explore the layers of time within a single space, where past, present, and future converge to reveal life’s interconnectedness. Next, Ram V and Filipe Andrade’s The Many Deaths of Laila Starr invites us to reflect on mortality and the ripple effects of individual lives through the lens of myth and reincarnation. Finally, we conclude with Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá’s Daytripper, a deeply moving meditation on the moments that define a single life.
Throughout the course, we will analyze these works on both a narrative and an illustrative level, uncovering how storytelling and visuals intertwine to convey meaning and evoke emotion. Together, these works offer a rich, visual exploration of the endless ways life can unfold.
