What kind of little rituals do you do before you start writing? Light a candle? Take a walk? Make a cup of coffee or play music? Every writer has different habits and routines, but the most important thing is to keep doing it. To be a writer means simply to keep writing.

This generative writing class will combine in-class writing prompts and advice to help you develop a regular writing habit. We will read interviews with other writers and see what tricks, superstitions, routines, habits, and other quirks helped them keep a regular writing practice. Remember: the life of a writer is a marathon, not a sprint. This class will help you maintain a writing practice, one day at a time.

Course Outline:

  • Day 1: Generative Writing Prompts
Day 2: Class Discussion of Author Habits (Including Interviews and Craft Essays by Sigrid Nunez, Colm Tóibín, and Zadie Smith)

This course is held online via Zoom.
