In this short story workshop course, students will read and discuss contemporary fiction for craft insight, do generative in-class writing exercises, and share and workshop at least one short story of their own.
The first half of this course will be the craft readings, discussions, and generative writing exercises, giving everyone time to create at least the start of a new story. In the second half of this course, we will continue with in-class writing exercises and building out our drafts, but most of our time will be spent sharing, discussing, and workshopping our own short stories, either previously written or started in this group.
Our workshopping sessions will focus on conversation rooted in curiosity rather than criticism; we’ll seek to empower the author to identify and articulate their intention and goals, deepening their authority and vision for the next draft. Students should expect to read between 15-45 pages of prose in between each meeting.
This course will be useful for those just starting to draft short fiction, individuals preparing for an MFA program, or even anyone on the other side of a writing program seeking to maintain their practice.
Course Outline:
- Weeks One–Three: Reading Contemporary Short Stories, Craft Discussion, and In-Class Writing Exercises.
- Weeks Four–Eight: Workshop 2-3 students short stories, up to 15 pages each. Schedule to be assigned during the first class.
This course is held online via Zoom.
