Every great work of writing provides a satisfying setup and payoff, and this class will take a closer look at how that might be accomplished. In our time together, we will engage in close readings of opening sentences, paragraphs, and stanzas, and how those openings engage with the final images of a piece. I’m interested in how a full “swoop” of narrative power is achieved between these two places, the thrill of that suspension and recursion, the moment that lands the plane. We’ll workshop short pieces and approach the work through this particular lens. Let’s use this frame, this noticing, to find a new shape for things.
