Spend an afternoon with two professional New Yorker cartoonists who take you through their process, from brainstorm to finished illustration. See everything that goes into that final, polished cartoon. Learn how to ideate, make preparatory sketches, edit your drawing and caption, and give your peers helpful feedback. You will leave this course with 3-10 ideas for your own cartoons, at least one fully drawn original cartoon, and the tools to come up with your own original work long after you’ve left class.
Course Outline:
- Hour 1: Intros, course goals, guide to terminology, initial journaling and sketching, idea-generating exercises, first original cartoon sketch
- Hour 2: How to give feedback and criticism, first group workshop, learning to refine your sketch, learning to edit your caption, second original cartoon sketch
- Hour 3: Second group workshop, “caption contest,” master’s copy exercise, third original cartoon sketch
- Hour 4: Fine-tuning your sketch, fine-tuning your caption, third group workshop, fourth original cartoon sketch
- Remaining half-hour: final group workshop, debrief
