In this workshop, participants will learn what’s behind a studio or streamer’s decision to option a book and the process of adapting a book into a movie or series. We’ll talk about authors’ involvement in the process and the predominant story structures of particular genres and formats. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between the different formats of book adaptation
  • Describe the process by which a book becomes a movie/series
  • Identify the traits that make a book suited to optioning by a studio or streaming service
  • Edit their own story structure to best fit a particular genre/format
  • Receive feedback on their story structure and overall pitch

    Phil Cohen

    Phil Cohen

    Phil Cohen is a developmental editor and literary executive for Warner Bros. Throughout his time there, and in his previous role at Sony Pictures, Phil has acquired dozens of books, comics, graphic novels, and long-form articles to develop into feature films and television series. Over his career, he has acquired a deep understanding of what makes books work and has advised clients as a developmental editor on plot, pacing, world construction and commercial viability to ensure that every author is able to get their story to the widest possible audience. When he’s not working, Phil lives with his wife in Brooklyn and can usually be found playing shows or in the studio with his band Tree River.
