“A Justice,” the 1931 precursor to Faulkner’s greatest novel, Absalom! Absalom!, explores the fraught history of human bondage through the experiences of its Native American and enslaved characters, and the points of view of the quasi-aristocratic Quentin Compson and mixed-race foil Sam Fathers. We’ll reflect upon Faulkner’s profound engagement with the past in a story that is also prophetic of America’s future.

What to read in advance: Please read William Faulkner’s “A Justice” in its entirety. A copy of the story will be emailed upon registration.

What to expect from this reading group: The class will begin with a 20-minute introduction to the story and its place in Faulkner’s biography and body of work. Plenty of time will be available to explore the story’s issues and themes. Questions and comments will be welcomed.
