While writing is a sedentary activity, many novelists, poets, and essayists rely on their daily walks and runs for inspiration. Through the story “Running Alone,” we will explore the connection between running and writing/reading. We will discuss the importance of movement in relation to creativity, and the many authors who have written about their running habit.
What to read in advance of the first meeting: Please read “Running Alone” before we meet.
What to expect from this reading group: I typically open our time together with some information about the piece we are discussing. In this case, I will also offer some science about running and writing. Then, I will open the floor for discussion about both the story and our own running and walking habits.
Reading List:
- “Running Alone” by Halimah Marcus published by One Story MARCH 7, 2013 issue #176. A PDF of the text will be provided to all participants.
