Jamaica Kincaid’s Annie John is a classic Caribbean coming-of-age novel. Set in 1950s Antigua, the story is told from the point of view of Annie, a girl of precocious intelligence, big feelings, and a mischievous streak. We will explore how Kincaid brings together themes of colonialism and education, girlhood and friendships, mother-daughter relationships, and mental illness.
What to expect from this reading group: This will be a discussion-based group, where participants are encouraged to share their views. The instructor will moderate the conversation offering context and framing questions.
What to read in advance of the first meeting: Please read Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid.
