The American Dream is deeply embedded in our country’s imagination as well as our individual makeup. In this group, we will read and discuss four books that explore what the American Dream represents and how the search for it is manifested from differing perspectives, traditions, and environments. Representing a varied examination of the American Dream throughout the 20th century, these books provide a varied landscape for this elusive idea.
Readers will analyze and discuss the characters, conflicts, language, and themes in the books while asking if the American Dream has ever really existed, whether it continues to exist, and if so, how it embodies the characters and our own lives today?
