This reading and discussion group will explore the writing of two British authors, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Angela Carter, as well as the writing of Flannery O’Connor, considered one of the United States’s most gifted writers.
Carter’s stories are feminist and picaresque works brimming with magical realism. O’Connor died at age thirty-nine yet left a large body of work. Engaging and delightful, Sylvia Townsend Warner has been considered one of the most talented and well-respected British authors of the twentieth century. All three were unique, independent women who imagined characters and situations that reflect particular places and ordinary lives.
What to read in advance of the first meeting:
- Flannery O’Connor: “Wildcat” and ”The Geranium”
- Sylvia Townsend Warner: “The Inside-Out” and ”The Candles”
- Angela Carter: “Black Venus”and ”The Bloody Chamber”
