The aim of our reading group is to experience and discuss Nothomb’s unique approach to autobiographical fiction. Each of the selected novels offers a distinct perspective on how she challenges conventional notions of authorship and narrative truth. From the whimsical to the profound, Nothomb’s exploration of identity, desire, and societal norms bends into her own memories and invites us to revisit our own. The reading group will work as a space for participants to share their insights and interpretations, and to pose questions on these thought-provoking novels.
Please read The Character of Rain for our first class.
- Session I: The Character of Rain
- Session II: Loving Sabotage
- Session III: Life of Hunger
- Session IV: Fear and Trembling
- Session V: Tokyo Fiancée
What to expect from this reading group: Conversational and participant-driven.
