This workshop focuses on structuring a novel or short story around a propulsive plot that is truly satisfying for the reader. In advance of each meeting, participants will read a short lesson on craft along with each other’s submitted work. During class discussions, participants will focus on identifying techniques for understanding, developing, and deepening their writing, including distilling plot down to its essential conflict and outlining a story in order to strengthen its internal logic. In addition, all participants will receive individual in-class and written feedback from each other on their submissions.

The course is an opportunity to learn about shape and structure, not only of the particular narratives discussed in class but of fictional narratives in general. It is open to writers working in any genre, at all experience levels, and at any stage of a writing project. The goal for this workshop is for participants to gain clarity on both their own story and storytelling as a whole.
