Some of literature’s greatest works (The Great Gatsby, Annie John, Giovanni’s Room) are novellas, usually about 100 to 150 pages. The novella allows for deeper exploration and explanation than a short story, but tends to limit the number of characters and focus on one story line as opposed to longer novels. In this group, we will read a novella each month and explore each work’s language, story structure, plotting, and character development. We will read Passing by Nella Larsen, Revenge by Jim Harrison, Home by Toni Morrison, and Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf.
