Fraud Alert: Scam Emails Impersonating The Center for Fiction

It has come to our attention that individuals falsely claiming to represent The Center for Fiction (CFF) have been sending fraudulent emails to authors.

These messages often:

  • Use Gmail or other personal email addresses.
  • Claim to be from a “Booking Officer” or CFF’s leadership.
  • Invite authors to join a “private book club” or “Spotlight Session.”
  • Request a fee to “reserve a slot” or “cover organizational costs.”

Please note:

  • The Center for Fiction does not have a “Booking Officer.”
  • We never charge authors any fees to participate in our programs, book clubs, or events.
  • Official communications will always come from a centerforfiction.org email address.

If you receive such a message:

  • Do not reply or send money.
  • Forward the full email (including headers) to [email protected].
  • Report the message as abuse in your email client (e.g., Gmail’s “Report abuse” option).

For verification of any outreach, please contact us directly at [email protected] or by phone at 212-755-6710.

We value our author community and regret that these bad actors are attempting to exploit it. Thank you for helping us protect writers from fraud.
