Submissions Accepted May 10 to June 10, 2024

The Center for Fiction invites young writers, ages 13-18 to submit their best work for our National Teen Storyteller Contest. As part of our programming for the 2024 NEA Big Read celebration of Madeline Miller’s Circe, we are looking for short fiction that Reimagines Classic Myths for a chance to win publication to our Short Story Dispenser, online publication on our website, and more!

We use myths to interpret the world and help us find our place in it. Greek myths continue to captivate diverse audiences, young and old because they stimulate the imagination and the senses, encouraging readers and listeners to bring their own meaning to them. With this year’s Big Read programming, we aim to reimagine the timeless myths of the past. We invite young writers to explore and reimagine classic mythology and to create original short fiction. The stories should be between 300-1000 words. Submit your story through our Short Edition portal by clicking on the Register button above between May 10th and June 10, 2024. Winners will be announced in July!

The three winning stories will be available through our Short Story Dispenser, located in our Bookstore, in addition to being published on The Center for Fiction website. Winners will also receive a Bookstore Gift Card and a Center for Fiction Tote Bag.

  • The first-place winner will receive a $100 Bookstore Gift Card and a CFF tote bag.
  • The second-place winner will receive a $75 Bookstore Gift Card and a CFF tote bag.
  • The third-place winner will receive a $50 Bookstore Gift Card and a CFF tote bag.
