Our 2019 NYC Emerging Writer Fellows

Bryna Peebles Cofrin-Shaw is from Northampton, Massachusetts and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA in creative writing from Hunter College and her BA from Brown University, where she studied climate change through the lens of the arts and humanities. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in the American Literary Review, Epiphany, and the Colorado Review. She is currently at work on a pile of stories, some quite short and some rather long.

Jonathan Durbin’s fiction has appeared in Tin House, One Story, New England Review, Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading and Catapult, among others. He has been awarded residencies at The Ragdale Foundation and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and is an alumnus of the Writers’ Institute at CUNY and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He is currently at work on his first novel and a collection of short stories.

Cally Fiedorek’s work has appeared in Narrative, The Sewanee Review and The Southampton Review, and will appear in the Pushcart Prize Anthology 2020. She studied at Yale and the University of Oxford. She lives with her husband and daughters in Manhattan, where she grew up, and is working on a novel.

Nusrat Hossain holds an MA in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on prison literature from NYU, and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. She is a Reading and Writing Instructor for a CUNY college transition program at a community college in Queens, NY. She is currently revising her first novel about a Muslim American family, highlighting the experiences of a young hijabi woman.

Alanna Schubach is a fiction writer, freelance journalist, and teacher. Her short fiction has been published in Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading, Post Road, The Lifted Brow, the Bellevue Literary Review, and more. She was named a Fellow in Fiction by the New York Foundation of the Arts in 2015, and awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2017. She has also contributed to The Atlantic, the Washington Post, Jacobin, Al Jazeera, the Village Voice, and more. She teaches fiction and essay writing for the Gotham Writers Workshop.

Sarah Wang is a writer in New York. She has written for BOMB, n+1, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Joyland, Catapult, Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Conjunctions, Stonecutter Journal, semiotext(e)’s Animal Shelter, The Shanghai Literary Review, Performa Magazine, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and The Last Newspaper at the New Museum, among other publications. She won a Nelson Algren runner-up prize for fiction in 2016 and is currently a fellow in the Asian American Writers’ Workshop’s Witness Program, which bridges conversations about mass incarceration and migrant detention. Jeri Ziegler is a writer and creative strategist. She has spent much of her career crafting narratives, articles and stories for all kinds of companies. She also writes haikus about personhood and parenthood at @jeri_zg. Jeri holds an MFA from the New School and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania. A (mostly) lifelong New Yorker, she lives in Manhattan with her husband, two daughters, and their dog. She is currently at work on a novel.
