Languages represent our perspectives to this world. Languages are our upbringings, memories, and journeys of our lives, and it is worth writing about them. What do languages mean to you, personally? And what are your narratives with the languages you speak and/or write? How do you live with your languages?

Over the course of this workshop, we’ll be reading compelling personal essays and writings from authors such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Mirene Arsanios, Sulaiman Addonia, E.J. Koh, and more, and write our own pieces. We’ll workshop students’ pieces and give each other written and oral feedback. In class, we’ll introduce different types of writings and themes that touch on languages and the many meanings languages bring to us, and to this world. Besides writing exercises we’ll be doing, we’ll also do some fun and experimental activities, such as listening to songs in languages we don’t speak, exploring films and arts from artists with the same or different tongues than yours.

Jenna Tang

Jenna Tang is a Taiwanese writer and literary translator based in New York. She translates from Chinese, French, and Spanish. She received her MFA in Fiction Creative Writing from The New School. Her translations or essays are published in Restless Books, Latin American Literature Today, AAWW, Catapult, McSweeney’s and elsewhere. She is one of the selected translators for the 2021 ALTA Emerging Translators Mentorship program with a focus on Taiwanese prose.
