In this introductory course, we’re going to have fun reading contemporary poetry while writing and sharing our own. There is no door to poetry locking you out. When you learn how to read a poem—how to unpack its images, hear its rhythm and explore its meaning—you’ll find you read everything with more ease!

This course has several aims: to help you become a more engaged and curious reader of poetry; to help you become a more confident writer thinking about literary texts; and to give you the tools to analyze and compose more effectively beyond this class.

You’ll read exciting, weird, funny, emotionally intense work by a wide variety of today’s poets; explore critical companion texts to broaden your understanding of them; listen to poems aloud; learn about literary devices—the poet’s use of voice, diction, image, form, occasion, closure—and write meaningful poems of your own.
