Over the six weeks we’ll create a relaxing and intriguing online group workspace to discuss poems that participants want to translate. (Poems, or mixed-genre texts, or any text that you wish to workshop alongside poems!) We’ll privilege curiosity, helpfulness, a bit of risk-taking to carry us forward, and we’ll share skills and linguistic music. We’ll start week 1 with a poetry translation exercise to get us all talking, sharing, and listening while thinking about the poem: visually, aurally, linguistically. Following that, we’ll workshop poems/texts that participants bring, 3 to 4 per week: the translator will read the original poem, and their translation in progress, then speak of the difficulties they’ve encountered and their progress in solutions, and get feedback from others.

Experienced translators and excited newcomers are all welcome; any language into English is welcome! Erín speaks French and Galician (galego) as well as English, works as well from Spanish and Portuguese, and loves proliferating languages! We’ll find joy and challenges in what everyone brings to the table, and we’ll make new friends!

Erín Moure

Erín Moure is a poet and translator of poetry who has published 18 books of poetry, a co-authored book of poetry, a volume of essays, a book of articles on translation, a poetics, and two memoirs; she has translated or co-translated 19 books of poetry and two of biopoetics from French, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese and Ukrainian, by poets such as Nicole Brossard (with Robert Majzels), Andrés Ajens, Louise Dupré, Rosalía de Castro, Chus Pato, Uxío Novoneyra, Lupe Gómez (alone and with Rebeca Lema Martínez), Fernando Pessoa and Yuri Izdryk (with Roman Ivashkiv). Four of her own books have appeared in translation, one each in German and Galician, and two in French.

Her work has received, among others, the Governor General’s Award, Pat Lowther Memorial Award, A.M. Klein Prize twice, and has been a three-time finalist for the Griffin Prize (twice for translation) and three-time finalist for a Best Translated Book Award (Poetry), for White Piano by Nicole Brossard (with Robert Majzels, Coach House, 2011), Paraguayan Sea by Wilson Bueno (Nightboat 2017), and Camouflage by Lupe Gómez (Circumference, 2019). A 40-year retrospective of her poetry, Planetary Noise: Selected Poetry of Erín Moure (Wesleyan, edited by Shannon Maguire) appeared in 2017; her latest book of poems is The Elements (Anansi, 2019), which she calls “a book of Dad.” Moure’s translation of Uxío Novoneyra, The Uplands: Book of the Courel and other poems (Veliz) appeared in 2020, along with a chapbook of poems by Juan Gelman, Sleepless Nights Under Capitalism (Eulalia) and Chantal Neveu’s This Radiant Life (Book*hug).

The new collection from Governor General’s Literary Award–winning poet and translator Erín Moure is a book about tenderness, and about The Good, in the face of destruction. The Elements is a family book, a thinker’s biography in poetry, and a polylingual homage.
