Each year The Center for Fiction offers KidsWrite Fellowships for young adults in need of financial assistance. To apply to be a 2022 Summer KidsWrite Fellow, please click here. The deadline to apply for a KidsWrite Fellowship is 11:59pm ET on June 15, 2022.

As we learn about the art of the short story, we will explore the form from its loose definition and basic structure, to all of its artistic complexities. We will develop and polish our craft skills in narrative structure, character development, setting and world-building, point of view, tone and voice, and building tension. As we develop writing and literature of our own, we will follow and close-read important works of contemporary fiction, highlighting diverse and varied modern voices in writing.

Week 1:

  1. Investigate and develop a working knowledge of the basic elements of short story telling and the craft of fiction writing.
  2. Develop our own individual story concepts and creative voices by putting into practice the craft elements mentioned above.
  3. Analyze significant works of short fiction that are representative of current and influential voices in the writing world–across a variety of genres.

Week 2:

  1. Continue to build on the elements of craft and ideas we generated in Week 1, starting to think about how we can disrupt and rethink the more traditional elements of storytelling.
  2. Learn about what comprises a writer’s workshop, including workshop structure, goals, and rules of respect and collaboration–how to both give and receive feedback.
  3. Apply what we’ve learned about the workshop into practice, sharing our work with one another and providing thoughtful, engaged, supportive, and constructive feedback.

Designed for young writers, ages 13-18.
Capacity: 12

    Anna Munroe

    Anna Munroe

A New Jersey native and New Yorker at heart, Anna Munroe is a lover of all things fiction. Prior to joining The Center for Fiction, she worked in academic publishing on higher education psychology texts, taught creative writing to NYC middle schoolers, and worked as a local cat-sitter. Located in Brooklyn, she’s tutored elementary, middle, and high schoolers in multiple boroughs, trained for and ran multiple half and full marathons, and mastered the art of reading while walking and doing the crossword on the train. In her short stories and long-form fiction, she explores grief, family dynamics, queerness, mental health, and how people communicate.

Anna is a recent graduate of The New School’s MFA in creative fiction writing, where she completed her first novel as part of her graduate thesis. She worked as a teaching fellow through WriteOn NYC, and has been published–both for her fiction and prose poetry–in The Alembic and Beyond Words Literary Magazine. Her work has also received the first place prize in fiction in Providence College’s annual poetry and fiction competition.
