A Statement on the Verdict of the Derek Chauvin Trial

Dear Members and Friends of The Center,

The guilty verdict in the trial of disgraced former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd is a step forward toward holding those responsible for killing Black people with impunity accountable for their depraved, criminal actions.

The Staff and Board of Directors of The Center for Fiction reinforce our solidarity with all who denounce white supremacy and police violence. We accept collective responsibility to achieve systemic and transformational change in the pursuit of justice and equality in America, recognizing that helping to change minds and behaviors that perpetuate racial injustice is something we all can and must do to preserve our humanity.

To that end, we celebrate the immeasurable accomplishments and contributions of Black writers to American and world culture. Black lives matter. Black stories matter.

Sincerely,
The Center for Fiction Board of Directors and Staff
