Books for NYC Schools

About Books for NYC Schools

In April 2010, The Center began its Books for NYC Schools Program to address the colossal need for books in New York City public schools and to create a generation of readers, writers and achievers. We now gather and distribute thousands of books each year by encouraging book donations from publishers and the public.

Included in our Books for NYC Schools Program are other community organizations that need children’s books. Pictured below are Harriet Stein, coordinator of the Union Settlement/OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program and Reginald Blackwell from the Union Settlement Fatherhood Program, making their own selections from children’s books donation!

Book Wish Lists

Participating school librarians and teachers are encouraged to create a Wish List of books they would like to receive. We also solicit donations of specific books from publishers and purchase others with the help of foundation and corporate support. Right now we are actively looking for books for the following schools:

The Academy for Young Writers

Bronx Envision Academy

The Union Settlement Association

The Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women

We hope you'll check these lists out and donate to these worthy students!

Or if you prefer, you can make a tax-deductible cash donation and we will purchase a variety of books on your behalf for one of our participating schools.

Donate via our online store or PayPal so we can purchase books for you (please note in the comments section that your donation is for KidsRead/Books for NYC Schools).

All of our programs are free to eligible schools and organizations!

If you think your school or organization could benefit from this book donation program, please call (212) 755-6710 or email Jon Michaud at jon@centerforfiction.org

How can you help? You can bring new or gently used books appropriate to grades K-12 any time you come to the Center.

Or donate via our online store or PayPal so we can purchase books for you (please note in the comments section that your donation is for KidsRead/Books for NYC Schools).

Are you a publisher?  We welcome donations of single copies for school libraries or multiple copies of titles for class curricula. And remember that high school students are reading classics and literary fiction, so many of your adult titles are perfect for students in grades 9-12.

We hope you'll also join us for the First Novel Fête, our annual benefit event celebrating our Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel prize finalists and raising money to support Books for NYC Schools.
