Over the course of his 2o-year career, the award-winning children's author and illustrator John Lewis Steptoe published 16 beloved picture books. Life magazine described 1969's Stevie "a new kind of book for black children."

He was among the handful of African American artists who made a career in children's books, and he received two Caldecott Honors, two Coretta Scott King Awards, and was acknowledged as a pioneer for books like Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters.


Three of John’s books have been reissued: Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, Stevie, and Baby Says!


Join his daughter Bweela on Saturday, May 18 for a special KidsRead event celebrating her father's cherished stories. She wrote forewords for each of her father's reissued books and served as the model for the drawings in Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters

BWEELA STEPTOE is the daughter of award-winning children’s author and illustrator John Steptoe. As well as the model of many of John Steptoe’s books including the most famous Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughter’s. Her mission is to educate and share the legacy of her father, John Lewis Steptoe with the world. In honor of her father, she has founded The John Lewis Steptoe Cultural Center. She travels to present, teach and give lectures focused on John Steptoe, his artwork, life and her life growing up with him. Bweela is also a fashion designer and contributing author for the anthology Delay But Not Denied: 20 Inspirational Stories About Life And Resiliency
