Plimpton Prize winner Isabella Hammad was joined by John Freeman as they discuss Hammad's debut novel, The Parisian.


A “sublime” (Zadie Smith) debut novel, The Parisian illuminates a pivotal period of Palestinian history through the journey and romances of one young man, from his studies in France during World War I to his return home to Palestine at the dawn of its battle for independence.


ISABELLA HAMMAD was born in London. She won the 2018 Plimpton Prize for Fiction for her story “Mr. Can’aan.” Her writing has appeared in Conjunctions and the Paris ReviewThe Parisian is her first novel.
JOHN FREEMAN is the editor of Freeman’s, a literary biannual published by Grove, and author of How to Read a Novelist and Maps, a collection of poems. He was the editor of the literary magazine Granta until 2013, the former president of the National Book Critics Circle, and his writing has appeared in almost 200 English-language publications around the world, including The New York Times Book ReviewThe Los Angeles TimesThe Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal.
