Authors & Editors
Put in a comma, delete that paragraph, move that sentence...the relationship between a writer and editor is more than a series of suggestions, it’s a complex web of trust that relies on give and take and mutual respect. In this new series, we’ve asked three writers to sit down with their editors to give us a sneak peak into that relationship and the elements it takes to make a stack of pages into a fully formed book.
Kate Christensen's new book, The Astral, is edited by The Center's Maxwell E. Perkins Award recipient, Gerald Howard of Doubleday.
Kate Christensen is the author of five novels, most recently Trouble. The Great Man won the 2008 PEN/Faulkner Award. She has written reviews and essays for numerous publications, most recently the NYTBR, Bookforum, Tin House, Elle, and Open City. She lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Gerald Howard is vice-president and executive editor of Doubleday; he has previously worked as an editor at W. W. Norton, Viking Penguin and New American Library. His essays and reviews have appeared in Bookforum, the New York Times Book Review and Tin House, among other publications.
