Winner of the 2016 First Novel Prize

for The Castle Cross the Magnet Carter

 

Kia Corthron was awarded the Center for Fiction's 2016 First Novel Prize for her debut novel, The Castle Cross the Magnet Carter (Seven Stories Press). Last year's winner, Viet Thanh Nguyen, presented the award to her at our Annual Benefit and Awards Dinner on Tuesday, December 6th at The Metropolitan Club. 

 

The hotly anticipated first novel by lauded playwright and The Wire TV writer Kia Corthron, The Castle Cross the Magnet Carter sweeps American history from 1941 to the twenty-first century through the lives of four mentwo white brothers from rural Alabama, and two black brothers from small-town Marylandwhose journey culminates in an explosive and devastating encounter between the two families. READ MORE


Judges for the 2016 First Novel Prize were Chris Abani; Kate Christensen; Rivka Galchen; Kate Walbert; and Viet Thanh Nguyen, winner of the 2015 First Novel Prize from the Center for Fiction and the Pulitzer Prize.

Recipient of the 2016 Maxwell E. Perkins Award

 
The Center for Fiction is pleased to announce that literary agent Eric Simonoff, Partner of William Morris Endeavor (WME), is the recipient of its 2016 Maxwell E. Perkins Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Field of Fiction. The award was presented to Mr. Simonoff at the Center’s December 6 Annual Benefit and Awards Dinner in New York City.

 

In 2005 the Center for Fiction established the Maxwell E. Perkins Award to honor the work of an editor, publisher, or agent who over the course of his or her career has discovered, nurtured and championed writers of fiction in the United States. This award is dedicated to Maxwell Perkins in celebration of his legacy as one of the country’s most important editors. READ MORE
